Google has announced that it will use its storage of electronic data to track and publicly report on the movements of individuals at the population level during the COVID-19 pandemic. BBC article opens with childish video making out smart phone tracking of those with Covid-19 is rather trendy, like guarding against STDs! The public are being treated like children, or children are writing the promotion for this. The plan is obviously to get through to teenagers and thereby trap that generation into this surveillance. The Tony Blair Institute for Global Change (TBI), founded by the former prime minister, says it could offer an "escape route" from the crisis. In a report, the Institute argues the public must accept a level of intrusion that would normally "be out of the question in liberal democracies". Out of the question indeed, which only makes the whole pandemic drama look like an excuse to implement more surveillance. In fact if people are made aware by their phones that someone near them has a 'coronavirus', then everyone will be running away from everyone, total bedlam.
